An extraordinary meeting of the current members of the Bethel Community was held in Perth last night.

Attached is a Media Statement issued today re the decision taken at last night’s meeting to wind up Bethel.

The members of the interim leadership group wish to emphasise that this decision is no way intended to sweep any issues under the carpet but is what the members believe is an appropriate and timely response to the situation.

The outgoing interim leadership group also reiterates the following:

• We continue to totally abhor and condemn the abuse which has occurred at Bethel. It was totally contrary to Christian beliefs and morals. The structural and cultural issues driven by some past leaders were totally unacceptable according to any community moral standards.
• There were fundamental failures of governance, culture and behaviour at Bethel which overstepped all acceptable boundaries.
• Bethel, as has been constituted and in its current location cannot continue — it is a source of too much pain for too many people — including past and present members of the Community.
• There is still a need for healing for many people and we want to continue to support that process.
• A lot of good came out of Bethel for families in the Community over some 25 years. We hope there might be some way to continue that work. But right now our focus is on closing down Bethel; continuing to help those who have suffered; and continuing with our own spiritual journeys.
